I grew up in Smithfield, and it'll always have a soft spot in my heart. It's absolutely beautiful late in the spring. I loved going to school here. I loved the teachers, the administration, and the activities. Most of the kids seemed to do really well in school and continue on to ...Read More
college. One of my favorite parts about living in Smithfield was its annual summer Health Days, which is a festival with a parade to celebrate and encourage healthy living, particularly physical activity. Outdoor activities never end, since the town is nestled up against beautiful mountains with lots of hiking trails. I have fond memories of all the walks I would take by myself as a young girl, without fear of crime. There's also lots of parks, a newly renovated library, and a fantastic grocery store, among other things like Wendy's and Papa Murphy's. Utah State University is about 10 minutes away, and everything else you need is in Logan.
There are just a couple pitfalls, but depending on your preferences, you might not care:
First off, almost everyone is fiercely Mormon, and the community is built around that. If you're not Mormon, or if you're gay or a person of color, you run the risk of you or your kids being ostracized. However, the city tries to be as inclusive as possible and things are not as bad as they used to be. People have been becoming more educated and open minded. I've seen some bullying but no hate crimes. The schools in Smithfield are pretty good at fighting the bullying, in my opinion. Mormons tend to be very friendly but some of them have little interest in being your friend if you won't convert. Also, it's hard to find a bar or a cafe since Mormons don't drink alcohol or coffee. Mormons tend to not commit crimes, either, so that's great! Whenever anything bad does happen, the whole community will have your back.
Northern Utah is a cold desert. The winters are rough but not humid. There's lots of snow and it's the perfect texture for skiing. If you like winter, you'll love it here, since it seems to last forever. Don't spend too much time outside in the winter, though, since the cold pulls the pollution down and the mountains create a bowel for it to stay in. Yuck. You'll also use a ton of lotion all through the year. Summers are fantastic because it's a dry heat and there's lots of lakes for boating and swimming.
If you're not an outdoorsy person, you'll be bored.
Also, the area has seen some very fast growth lately and the developers can't keep up. Real estate prices have been climbing but are still relatively affordable. On the plus side, most of the houses are brand new and really nice. Expect to build your home if you move here.
