A Huge Mistake

One of the least desirable locations in Canada, and I wasn't surprised to discover its "Poor" rating here. As a resident, I can see few benefits from anything other than a short-term stay, as the community is extremely down-at-heel, with its high point but a distant memory pegged ...Read More
in the nineteenth century. In descending order, the life priorities of the locals are: Riding their ATVs in the summer, and riding them in the winter. If your interests vary from his norm, you will find life here as intriguing as a sentence of hard labour in a penal colony. Lunenberg and Halifax are not too far away from Shelburne, and if you're thinking of residing in Nova Scotia, I would suggest confining your home searches to areas no more than an hour's drive from these two centres to avoid extreme depression and suicidal ideation.

We moved to Shelburne in 2022, and bought a 3-bedroom house on 4 acres next to the sea. The only benefit to moving here is the accessibly priced real estate. However, everything else surrounding this one benefit is pretty horrendous. Shelburne definitely has an "end of the road" ...Read More
feel to it, and is looking very tired. Despite its historical significance, most of its architecture is falling into ruin, and the locals just don't seem to care. The area has incredible potential, but as mentioned, no one seems to care about anything apart from riding their quads. All the restaurants are notably awful, so you can abandon any notion of going out for dinner. There are no pubs/bars. Like I said, someone resourceful would make a killing here just on the tourist trade alone, as cruise ships frequently come here in the summer. Why is anybody's guess, as even the accommodation is pretty horrendous. There is a single Sobey's for your groceries, but prices are a scandal, and we do all our food shopping in Liverpool, or Barrington. The Islands provincial park is a very nice location. Unlike BC, there is limited access to beaches, and if you're accustomed to the beaches in BC, you'll find them quite sterile over here. We stopped going to the beaches here ages ago due to this fact. There is a vast and alarming gulf between the haves and have nots, and with employment options being non existent, poverty is evident everywhere. The locals are cheery, but if you come from away, get used to being alone, as they aren't overly fond of "outsiders" coming here. Our neighbours certainly didn't give us a standing ovation when we pulled up in our moving truck. Actually, more than a few of them were quite aggressive, requiring police intervention. A curious aspect to living here is that you will find your neighbours wandering around your house and property without being invited. This has happened to us many times, until we put our foot down, and has happened to all the other people we've met who "come from away" as well. There is a massive tick and Lyme disease problem here. If you're in the woods, picking up ticks is inevitable. My record was eight after working in the garden for a few hours. The summers are short, and characterized by lots of fog. The winters are mild, with the snow rarely remaining on the ground for long. Most days are windy, and wind storms are a frequent occurrence in the winter. I have never lived in such a hopelessly dire location as this before, and it has been the least positively rewarding experience of my life. It feels like a prison sentence living here. Yes, you're surrounded by nature, but it's presence is irrelevant, as it's all decidedly one-note after BC, and is so impenetrable to be almost like a barrier instead of something you'd like to explore. We will happily be leaving sometime soon, as this Shelburne experience has been little more than a protracted nightmare, and its memory will serve only a painful life lesson. It is a below average community that has well earned its awful reputation. However, it's definitely nicer than Barrington or Yarmouth, so it has that nebulously positive distinction. Avoid at all costs.
