Great place for white conservatives to live. 3.5 rating By Thoughtank101 ( Nov 10, 2017) Pros:Cost of living is low. Crime is low. Weather is fine, no extremes really. Public transportation is very slow and ends at about 5:30pm. If you are a white conservative, on low income, this is your heaven. Good for retirees, lots of apartments available for the elderly, medica ...Read More l care isn't far from anywhere. Cons:Scranton is an over 80% white community. It hasn't had a lot of experience with other races. To me Scranton being an older community with low education, it's in sort of a time capsule. The way people speak dress and act is sort of 1950s , so its a sort of covert racism that you'll get here and being a relatively small community with limited job opportunity, finding a good job without having a connection, is going to be very difficult. Nicely put : Stay away or leave if you can. 0.5 rating By Steve So ( Mar 02, 2017) Scranton Pa, where to start? Don't believe all that's written. There is very little industry left, in fact a job that pays a livable wage is nearly non-existent. The area has plenty of food service and retail jobs, but sadly little else. Then there's the city itself, higher than ...Read More average taxes for lower than average services. The city itself is slowly sliding into a bankruptcy situation as it owes much more money out than it's bringing in even with local taxes that are higher than Philadelphia PA. That being said the management of the city and it's school district are as corrupt as you will find. Talk to locals and most will tell you they are waiting for big arrests on these folks. Speaking of arrests, most crime in the city go unreported except very large ones so stats are unreliable. To sum it up, there are much better places to go. Read Less
Scranton, PA - In The Pocono Mountains 4.5 rating By Anonymous ( Jul 28, 2010) My wife and I spent a week in Scranton at the Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel. The hotel was definitely on par with other 4 ...Read More or 5 star hotels but had rates comparable to a 2 or 3 star hotel. Scranton is located in the beautiful Pocono mountains and due to that the highways go through a lot of twists and turns. The city of Scranton is kind of difficult to find your way around but the people are very helpful with directions.

There are a lot of stores in the area including some awesome small neighborhood grocery stores. The restaurants seemed a bit pricey but the food was good. We had a lot of fun just looking around. The whole area is beautiful and Scranton is pretty high up on a mountain so you can see for miles around. There is a lot to do both in the city and the surrounding countryside. I look forward to visiting Scranton again. Read Less
