Salem has a rich history and quite a few amenities. If one is looking for a bite to eat or a drink, Salem has plenty of options. If you really like coffee or sandwiches, Salem happens to have four Subways and two Dunkins, plus a Tim Hortons and several mom and pop coffee shops th ...Read More
at are quite good too. Besides those, there are still countless pizza places, bars, grills, and sit-down restaurants.
If religion is your thing, Salem has a variety of churches, a few of which are quite old and beautiful.
Salem is home to several parks for the kids to play in, and most of the times, they are relatively safe. Usually, the cops keep an eye on the parks throughout the day to prevent any shady business from going down.
The shining star of the city is definitely the school system. Not only are the schools equipped with a fantastic faculty and administration, but the scholarship opportunities alone are reason enough to even live in the area. The Alumni Association gives away hundreds of thousands each year to students that apply for and meet the qualifications for their scholarships, of which there is a wide range. Many students receive money for having above a 3.5 GPA alone, with the amounts increasing the higher the GPA. This provides students with an incentive to work hard and helps them to be able to go to college or trade school (also, if your student completes all four high school years at SHS, they will receive more than a student who did not). The teaching is great, the scholarship opportunities are to die for, and the cost of education is little to none.
The cost of living in Salem is pretty low, and there are employment opportunities both within and around Salem for those willing to look. Unfortunately, many places in Salem are having a difficult time finding employees because either people look over the type of work (even though it pays relatively well) or, in most cases, they simply cannot find anyone that can pass a drug test.
All in all, Salem is not a terrible place to grow up and start a family. But, it does have a bit of a small town mentality shared by most of the people who live there, and that can be quite annoying. Honestly, it is a great place to live temporarily or to raise your children in, but I would avoid staying there for your entire life, as it is just one of those places that you either take your chance to leave or you get stuck in the town forever.
-Someone who grew up there and still visits often enough to see it from an outside view
