Red Deer, AB
Alberta’s third largest city sits between Calgary and Edmonton in Aspen parkland. Red Deer is a beautiful city amongst rolling hills and farmlands. It is a major centre for oil distribution, petrochemical production and agriculture, as well as having a large commercial centre. In the past, Red Deer was a gathering place Aboriginal tribes and European fur traders, which has a lot to do with the fact that the Red Deer River runs right through the city. In the early 1900s there was a massive increase in settlers, and by the 1950s it had become one of the fastest growing cities in the country.
Many residents will tell you that living in Red Deer is nothing short of wonderful thanks to its stunning landscapes and fantastic recreational activities. There are cross-country ski trails and cycling trails throughout the city, as well as places to go horseback riding and canoeing. There are also numerous places to wine and dine in the downtown area. Surprisingly, the city centre is also one of the most affordable places to live in the city. West Park is also a fun area, though this has a lot to do with the student life at Red Deer College, which is the only post-secondary institute in the city.
Family life is key in Red Deer and is part of what makes it such a great place to live. There are numerous public and catholic schools spread across the city, as well as four private schools. There is also a francophone school in downtown Red Deer that is fantastic if French is your first language. Sorensen Station - the city’s main bus terminal - is also in the downtown area, which has 15 routes throughout the city. There are also special school routes that go to some of the middle schools and high schools in the city. Other than these bus routes, there is no other public transportation in Red Deer, though there are long-distance buses to both Calgary and Edmonton.
In 2003, Red Deer was named as the Cultural Capital of Canada thanks to its wide variety of cultural groups and art. It was around this time that the city saw a huge increase in the amount of immigrants moving here, which has only added to its charm. Key places of interest in Red Deer include the Central Alberta Theatre, the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery, the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra and the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame. On top of that, there are shopping malls, community centre and recreation centres that any resident will enjoy.
