My Life In Germantown 4.5 rating By Anonymous ( Jun 05, 2014) Germantown is a very busy area to live in, and can feel very overcrowded at times.

For those who enjoy visiting or living in locations that have lots of historical value, Germantown would be a great place to consider. Even the YMCA located on Greene St. looks like a huge mansion. Germantown is residence to many Philadelphia area politicians, scholars, and artist. Germantown is home to some of Philadelphia's finest dining spots, and if you love to shop, there are quit a few boutiques located along Germantown Ave.

One of the many perks I found during my time living there, were the many historical parks and recreational sites. For instance, there is the historic Awbury Arboretum, which sits on a 55 acre estate. It is located at 1 Awbury Road in East Germantown, and is open daily to the public free of charge.The parks are beautifully maintained. One in Particular is Cliveden Park located close to were I lived on Upsal St. in the Mt. Airy section, and the Wissahickon Valley Park a 1400 acre park that is part of the infamous Fairmount Park system. Wissahickon Valley Park is a beautiful park full of colorful trees, winding roads and streams, along with many points of interest such as the Cedar House, Glen Fern, and the Heritage House.

Housing in the Germantown area is fairly reasonable as far as I'm concerned. We lived in a 10 bedroom, 3 bathroom mansion formerly owned by a prominent Philadelphia Judge, purchased for $365,000.00 ten years ago. Though I no longer reside in the house, family members still live there. However, if you're not the type to live in huge mansions,there are lovely, town homes located further north that run in the neighborhood of 1400.00-1500.00 monthly. These homes usually have 3-4 bedrooms, 2 baths with a basement.

On the downside, Germantown Ave. has trolley tracks which I hated. They're fine for those who like riding in trolleys. As for motorist, they can cause lots of damage to a vehicle. The Ave. is very narrow to drive on, yet, traffic runs two-ways.

I hated that when I lived there, and tried to avoid it as much as possible. Otherwise it is a pretty nice place to live and shop. Read Less
