We spent a year in North Rustico, having moved from the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia during the height of the pandemic. In a nutshell, if a province's chief claims to fame are potatoes, and a fictional character in a novel, be prepared to be underwhelmed. It was a very unp ...Read More
leasant experience in NR, and I do not understand why this community is rated so highly, as it had nothing to offer. Cavendish road runs right through NR, and as most of the housing is clumped close to this road, and as it's a main artery, you rarely get a break from the incessant vehicle noise. During tourist season, you never get a moments break from the noise. Speaking of tourists, the entire island is entirely geared towards servicing their needs, and everything ( I do mean that literally) shuts down when tourist season ends. There is a tiny Clover grocery store to service your basic needs, but it's inventory is so lacklustre that it provides a disincentive to eating. It has more than a few restaurants, but only two remain open year round. Apart from the Yellow House, all of the restaurants were on the below average side of the spectrum. Okay, the really bad part: If you "Come from away" you will not be made to feel welcome here. All of our neighbours were within meters of us, but a year later, we didn't know them, and they avoided us completely. Yes, we did made many attempts, but all were shunned. Another aspect to NR is that many of the houses there were only occupied for a few months out of the year. Charlottetown is about twenty minutes away, and contains all the modern conveniences, without losing its small town appeal. The humidity in the summer is like nothing I've ever experienced in my life, and the winters are utterly dire. Blizzards are common in the winter, and when they occur, the entire island shuts down. Be prepared to be snowbound in your home, because it's as if they only have one plow to service the entire island. Yes, you can be meters from a main road, and completely housebound for several days. The beaches and countryside were both decidedly dull after BC, and we never understood why anyone would go out of their way to visit PEI. The myths surrounding the place didn't withstand a moments direct scrutiny in person, and the entire experience was an abysmal disappointment and a waste of time.
