Took me by surprise 3 rating By Donte D ( Jul 10, 2016) I have lived in several large cities over the years including Chicago, NYC, Philly and LA briefly (thank god briefly ) so I was surprised to find out just how many people in Hialeah do not speak English . All cities and larger towns have sections that are very dominated by ethni ...Read More c backgrounds of that section and the language associated , that's a good thing --adds some vibe from other countries but most people I have met over the years spoke English when interacting with someone who did not speak Spanish or speaks very little of it. When I first arrived I stopped in a Supermarket in the Hialeah area for a Coke and some peanuts to snack on --The lady at the checkout had no "idea what I was saying when I asked her a question in English , honestly she seemed agitated I was speaking English . I also needed directions to a Business that was within walking distance from the Grocery according to the info I was given by my supervisor. ... so I asked the 2nd girl at che3ckout if the "Business" was near by and she also had very little idea what I was saying. When settle in I realized the Same situation will occur at the Restaurants and other public entity's in Hialeah ---it is an issue you will have do deal with if you do not speak Spanish. Now before you get all "He's intolerant" at me please realize my first wife was Dominican and my daughter is half Dominican. I met my first wife living in NYC Washington Heights area which is basically all Dominican -- I loved the DR people. for the most part everyone spoke English unless they were with close friends or family. I have picked up enough Spanish over the years to get by but It's kind of a pain in the butt to be honest. Other than the Language barrier my major complaint is the traffic --the roads are really busy and slow moving . I love the Cuban Food I found, the weather and I have met some very nice people here so overall it's not a bad area - -very reasonable priced Real Estate and most stores/eatery's/pubs are reasonable. IMO the best thing about Hialeah is it's proximity to Miami, Ft Lauderdale etc where the Real Estate prices are much higher . Read Less
Hialeah, Florida, City Review 3.5 rating By Anonymous ( Jan 13, 2015) I moved to Hialeah when the corporation where I was employed relocated. I lived in Hialeah for 12 years. I enjoyed the close proximity to Miami. My apartment on Okeechobee, (a Native American name), overlooked a tranquil inlet of water.

The city of Hialeah, Florida was named by
...Read More the Seminole Native American tribe. The name Hialeah means "pretty prairie." Current census information reveals there are few Native American residents to be found in Hialeah. Today, ninety-four percent of its' citizens speak Spanish. Hialeah is Florida's sixth largest city. The city has a high concentration of senior citizens, and median home prices are surprisingly affordable. This could make Hialeah a pleasant and affordable option for retirement if you need to keep your housing budget on the lower end of the spectrum.

If you would like to relocate and bring your school age children, I suggest you check out the public school ratings, they are reported to be low to mediocre.

Do you enjoy going to the racetrack? Then you must visit the historic Hialeah Park Racetrack when you arrive in Hialeah. Built in 1922 by the city's founders, it was thought to be one of most beautiful racetracks in the world. After recent renovations, the track still possesses its' original beauty.

The city is close to Miami and boasts park and ride commuter services. This amenity makes it easy to commute to the big city for work.

Overall, Hialeah is a pleasant, sports friendly city with many teams and sports venues to choose from. Whether you like major league baseball, minor league baseball, hockey, soccer or basketball in this arena, Hialeah delivers!

When you are considering a move carefully research your options. Make your decision based on facts and you will be happier once you unpack and settle in!

The Good Life in Hialeah, Florida 5 rating By Anonymous ( Dec 19, 2011) I have been a joyful inhabitant of Hialeah, Florida for the past twenty years. A transplanted "snow bird," I fled the cold and snowy northern climate of New York for the sunshine state. I chose to settle in Hialeah for so much more than the weather, although, I must admit, I do n ...Read More ot miss the snow very much. Hialeah, Florida is home to big business, such as the corporate offices of The Home Depot, Starbucks, K Mart, Lowes, Wal-Mart, and Target. Yet, my town was rated the most boring community in 2009 by Forbes magazine. I perceived "boring" to mean "safe." As my hometown is in close proximity to the major metropolises of Miami and Ft. Lauderdale, safe is a desirable way to feel.

The name "Hialeah" was from the Seminole words for "high prairie." Indeed, it was the location the Indian population displayed their crafts and wares for sale to the early visitors to Miami. Over the past decade, immigrants from Cuba have claimed the city as an ethnic destination for refuges. The rich Hispanic influence has created an environment rich in culture, flavors, music, art, and emotions not found anywhere else in the continental United States. The driven work ethic of this previously oppressed population provides for a cohesive community of progress oriented enterprise. My neighbors work hard, maintain their cultural values and are happy to be able to live freely. Telemundo is the second largest Spanish television network in the United States. Its corporate offices are also located in Hialeah.

One of my favorite places is the Westland mall. Here there are over 100 stores and many restaurants. In addition, Hialeah Park is not only a professional racetrack, but is also an Audubon bird sanctuary. There is so much more to discover. Hialeah, Florida truly provides "the good life." Read Less
Hialeah - Affordable Hotels and Close to Miami 3.5 rating By Anonymous ( May 03, 2010) Hialeah is a great place to stay when visiting Miami, Florida. A positive is that while Hialeah is cheaper to stay in than Miami it is still very close in driving distance which means you won't ...Read More be paying an arm and a leg for gas. The drive takes me about 20-25 minutes door to door from Hialeah to Miami.

You won't find the intersting attractions or high end restaurants in Hialeah like you would in other larger cities. But Hialeah still does offer a handful of fun things to do and see. A few attractions that come to mind are the Amelia Earhart Park which offers bike trails, walking paths and even a petting zoo. For the more adventurous travelers, you can visit the Hialeah Racetrack which is beautifully maintained and always fun!

Another great thing about staying in Hialeah is that you don't even have to drive if you don't want to. You can take the metrorail into Miami. Although Hialeah most likey is not your true destination, it is a great place to stay if your true destination is Miami. It is a hop and a skip to Miami Beach from Hialeah.
