This is the upper peninsula of Michigan. One needs to fully grasp that concept and do a self evaluation as to what one truly desires in life and form your perspective on what is "nice". Many people live rough lives and that is certainly reflected among the houses and businesses. ...Read More
You need to accept traveling to nearby communities for acquiring specialty items, sometimes basic items, but that is life in rural Michigan. That said, the town is beautifully framed by the surrounding, never-ending northwoods that fall away from the higher rotund glacial drumlin upon where situated; it's a workout to just walk around the town, and the landscape has practically healed from past mining wounds. This area is an outdoor persons paradise. One can stop in at the local bakery downtown (which is rare now days) and buy a pastry, and then drive just two miles north of the golf course and see a moose wading in stream. The Paint and Michigamee Rivers are near-breath taking as the cut through cleavages of pre-cambrian bedrock cliffs and can be well accessed with the enormous amount of land open to the public. The people and the community are beautiful. They help each other out and is best exhibited in Forest Park Elementary and High School, which the national statistics characterize unfairly in my opinion. Class sizes are small and the teachers are very available to the parent. So if you want to live in a beautiful, quiet community that has all the necessities of life and is nested in a indescribable wilderness expanse, this town would be a good fit. If your life relies on corporate department stores and coffee chops, fast food chains, or that one shop where you can find authentic smoked paprika, then I would stop at the MI/WI border or Mackinac Bridge.
