An Review from a Lifelong Resident 3.5 rating By Anonymous ( Jan 26, 2024) Albany, like any other city, has its good points and bad points. We are a small city, not huge like Atlanta, but sizable enough. When it comes to entertainment, dining and shopping, there's a fair amount of stuff to keep people busy and plenty of choices. We have some unique spot ...Read More s like the Flint Riverquarium, the Ray Charles Memorial, the Civil Rights Museum, Chehaw Park and some other things. Most of the city is pretty safe; there are some bad neighborhoods but I don't of any city that doesn't have those. We are a majority Black city as others have stated but there are people from every race here and I'm not sure why it should matter to anyone what race is the majority anyway; most people here get along with everybody.

The two main issues with the town are the job atmosphere and the educational situation. Speaking as someone who struggled to find a job, most of the jobs that I find are pretty menial, there is a lack of decent white-collar work, and what decent work is available is often unreachable as they require large amounts of experience even at the entry level. There's not a diversity of jobs and it's at least partially because there's not a lot to attract businesses here. As for the schools, many of the public schools perform below what would be considered good standards; I cannot say why this is, though it's most likely that this is a low-income area and so the schools don't have the funding they need. There are plenty of intelligent, hard-working students and teachers who come out of the system but the problems remain. Not to mention, over the past decade or so, a number of schools have been shut down, and that can't be good for class sizing. Nobody is really working to fix any of these problems either, so they persist.

Overall, I believe my hometown is a good place to visit and even to live, so long as you can find agreeable work and know which schools are the best. Read Less
Image Problem Albany 1.5 rating By Anonymous ( Aug 08, 2019) Going out during the day is decent. Most of my Albany friends have been in jail or are overcoming addictions. The overwhelming number of homeless in this city is depressing and sad. The media focuses on the crime, bad news etc. it’s all anybody talks about, ‘how bad it is to live here’. Read Less
What Has Happened to Albany?? 0.5 rating By Brandon45 ( Nov 04, 2017) My God...Lived there yrs ago and now it is GHETTO TOWN!?!? Why did the whites move out and give the city away? Disgusting! Biggot Town USA 0.5 rating By peachstate4me ( Jan 18, 2017) I guess you can tell by the "Title,"my review of Albany is not so good, yet I will be honest, and tell you what I think is good about Albany, but that is very limited.First off,I have been here just over a year now, since January 13,2016.I am originally from Georgia, born and raised i ...Read More n Augusta,to be exact.I'm not at all racist, and infact have met quite a few decent and hardworking black people over my life time. That said, these are the facts: In the one year I have lived in this town,I have found it to be by far the most racist, hateful place I have ever had thew displeasure to ever come too.The population ratio is about 75/25,black and white. These includes a majority of black city, and county counsel,a black mayor, and about half of law enforcement are all black.Even though, you could fairly conclude, that the town is both black owned and operated,I;m not suggested that is bad in and of itself. However, when you couple that when the fact that white individuals such as myself have experienced almost daily, the ill treatment of being treated like an "intruder,"being given hateful looks, and rude ass treatment in places of business, then you might be able to see where I'm coming from. Most places I go,I find I'm the only white person around, but sometime there will be maybe,a few more. It's a shame to be out in this town, and have a group of blacks making racial remarks to each other, like "cracker",while in your presence, and just daring you to open your mouth, and say anything back. All this has been my experience, since I came to this town last year, but on atleast two other occasions,it got even worse. The first incident, happened last Summer at a local liquor store I went into.I entered the store one Friday, and approached the counter, where this black lady was working.I told her what I want, and in a very rude tone of voice, she ask for my I.D.,which I produced, and handed to her.Even though,I'm many years older than the legal age for drinking, she kept starring at me,and looking at my I.D.I finally remarked to her, that it was hot outside, and I wanted to make my purchase, and leave. She then got beside of herself, and promptly told me,"I don't have to sell you a damm thing."Long story short, she openly refused to sell me anything, and I turned and walked out.The second incident happened,a few months afterward.I was at a Family Dollar Store, and had a doubled Family Dollar shopping back, which I promptly left up front while shopping.I had my cell phone in the bag,and had forgot to take out.I was in the store bout 20 minutes, and while shopping, seen a black employee, peak around corner ale at me,as if I was shoplifting. When,I was cashing out,and picked up my bag I left up front,I noticed my cell phone was missing after I left the store.I immediately, went back in the store, and ask the cashier if someone had turned in a cell phone, just on the chance I had it in my hand, and laid it down. She said,"No",and I walked out the door, but the truth is,it was in my bag,and the black employee, who peaked around a corner ale at me,had stolen it out of my bag.I know I have been long winded in my review here, but,I want the wide internet audience reading this to be able to see a clear picture of how I have come to see this town as a very hateful, racist place to be.I know as your reading this, you have to be think,if it's really all that bad,Why don't you just leave, and Why did I come here in the first place.Well, that's where the little good of the town comes in at.My plan last year was to relocate somewhere else in Georgia, and I chose Albany, because,my research revealed that it is one of the best cost of living places to live in the whole state, and for me that has to be a number one priority.Basically,I came here because housing in my price range is very plentiful, and despite, hating this town,it also the reason I am still living here. The Good of Albany: It is very quiet town, with plenty of shopping, and eateries, has about 4 parks,a museum,a shopping mall, and bike friendly. It is also very affordable. However,if you are white, and are fortunate to have other choices of where you can live, but all means, pick somewhere else to live, not here. Albany, GA - Unexpected, But Fun! 4.5 rating By Anonymous ( Jul 28, 2010) During the spring of 2009 my family decided to take a month long camping vacation to get to know our native state Georgia. About two weeks into the trip our RV landed in Albany, GA. My husband would never admit it, but he had seriously miscalculated the miles to our next stop. Wh ...Read More ich should have been Okeefenokee State Park. We decided to stay right there in Albany, GA. We stayed at Albany RV Resort and it was really nice. Large very spacious sites, a cement patio, free Wi-Fi, shower houses and all the privacy one could ask for as well as fishing.

The second day in the city of Albany we visited Flint RiverQuarium and had a grand time. I especially enjoyed the Imagination Theater can you imagine a movie screen three stories tall and four stories wide? We watched, "Wild Ocean" and it was so real you could almost feel the whale's spray. To get to the theater you have to climb through a man made limestone cavern. How cool is that?

While we were in Albany, beside the good food and good people throughout the city, we also visited the Albany Georgia Civil Rights Museum and the museum of art. What an experience. We had a very nice vacation and we all learned a lot about the state of Georgia, then and now. Read Less
